Why my thumb joint hurts?

Why my thumb joint hurts?

Degenerative arthritis, also called osteoarthritis, is a disease that affects the joints of older adults and becomes more frequent in the population as age increases. Although its origin is not known with certainty, it is associated with age, it is also seen more frequently in repetitive activities and in people with obesity. The most accepted cause referred to in medical literature is the “multifactorial”, meaning that various lifestyles, environmental and genetic factors come together, causing the appearance, this condition is more common in the knees, hips and in the hand, just at the joint of the thumb with the wrist, or rather with the carpus.

When affected a hand, It originally manifests with sharp pain in the thumb that increases with activity when loading objects, squeezing or gripping, due to the sore thumb joint, which gradually increases in intensity. In its more advanced stages you can see deformity or deviation of the thumb and experience pain even at rest.

It is very common that the joint pain of the “older adult” is normalized and that it is allowed to evolve, which deteriorates the quality of life and condemns the decrease in activities. In some cases it is treated with anti-inflammatory drugs, which although can mitigatewrist pain near thumb, they do not delay the development of the disease.

Thorough assessment regarding the age, activities, other diseases and the needs of each patient is essential to provide satisfactory treatment. Patients come to medical consultation saying “my thumb hurts I don’t know why” or “I’ve had pain in my thumb for weeks doctor”

Surgical procedures provide pain relief, making it feasible to eliminate drugs and restore function to levels acceptable by most patients. They are also safe because they do not require general anesthesia, and in most cases they are ambulatory, that is, they do not require hospitalization after the intervention.
